About Us

Our Background

Montpelier Pre Primary School was started in 1966 by a group of the Durban Jewish Woman’s Union. Initially the school was started to educate the children of these women as there was a shortage of school facilities at the time. The State briefly took over the school from the DJWY for a while, but since 1997 the school has been independent. The school is a member of ISASA (Independent Schools Association of South Africa) and the Principal is a member of SAHISA (South African Heads of Independent Schools Association.) The school has been situated on the same property all these years and the original building has celebrated 100 years of existence. As the school has grown so extensions have been made to the building, adding on the art room, fantasy room and upstairs Busy Bee classrooms. Montpelier used to have a Grade R class, but due to the surrounding junior schools opening their own Grade R’s suffered a drop in pupil numbers. As a result of this the school has opened a junior group to make up the numbers. There are five groups of children from 2 years old to 5 years.
